Asheem
is 26 and spends his time as a Computer Programmer. After receiving
his IT degree from an American online university, Asheem joined a
fairly new firm in his hometown of Mumbai and thoroughly enjoys helping
the company get their computer systems up and running. The past few
years have been a whirlwind for Asheem, but he has been up to the
task. He is thankful that he can apply lessons that he learned in
school to his work projects on a daily basis.
Asheem gets regular requests from Corporate Strategy to build tools that help the company better understand what's going on with their customers. Sajeev specializes in data mining and is really good at figuring out practical ways of extracting and presenting really complex data models simply. Asheem has learned a lot from him and eventually wants to become an information architect.
9:30 a.m.
Asheem has a meeting with Sajeev and the two other team leaders. They
are dividing up the workload on a new project. By the time the meeting
is over, Asheem has 73 man-days worth of programming work for himself
and his team. They have to figure out several different kinds of data
transformations that will produce properly formatted XML documents
and write the app components that will drop into the overall project.
The other teams will handle UI implementations and some library clean
up, and incremental builds.
12 noon
After the meeting Asheem jumps right into the MS Project Plan for
this project (code named "Vixen") and already has it about 60 percent
done by 12:30. He goes to lunch with Kamal and Anjay, two members
of his team. They talk about taking an in-house training on JavaBeans,
Asheem's cousin in Bangalore who works at a competitor, a new video
game, and Kamal's latest vacation to the United States.
3:00 p.m.
By 3:00 Asheem has finished the work breakdown planning and project
schedule for his team. They meet and all agree that the project is
feasible and they are excited about the work. In less than two months
time, using Vixen, Corporate Strategy will be able to randomly profile
their over 18 million customers by nine different demographic metrics
and get 3D visualization of their spending and saving behavior. Pretty
cool!
Asheem particularly likes Vixen because he will be coding a lot and
he will also meet regularly with the UI implementation lead. The two
of them will be making design recommendations to Sajeev, instead of
the other way around.
