Deng
is a 47-year-old Director of Product Marketing for a mid-tier
consumer electronics manufacturer. Deng began his career as a copywriter
in advertising and, over the years, moved up the ladder so he could
do more in marketing than just write about other people's products.
He now runs a department of 30 people and travels the world, establishing
contacts and relationships for his company.
Deng's latest travels have taken him to Las Vegas, USA, for an international
consumer electronics trade show. Deng is excited to debut a few new
products that have been in development for almost three years now.
Here's a quick look at Deng's first day at the show.
7:00 a.m.
Deng takes a quick shower while e-mail downloads. He's got to get
some answers back to the MarCom team at HQ about the new print campaign
for EMEA (Europe Middle East Africa). They're trying to expand from
seven to nine languages. Deng is not sure that the localization budget
can handle it.
8:00 a.m.
Deng has breakfast with the VP of Sales for a large North American
distributor to go over the press conference.
9:00 a.m.
Deng has a call with his sales force to give them some detail on the
competitors' new products at the show. There was an industry party
last night, and the spies were out. It looks like they're safe on
feature set, but the pricing might be a problem. Deng works the booth
and does three new product demos on the stage in the morning.
Noon
Deng grabs a $9 shrink-wrapped sandwich for lunch (Thank goodness it's on his expense account!) and does the demo again twice in the afternoon before the press conference at 4:30. It goes great, but sure enough, one of the magazines nails him on the pricing.
6:00 p.m.
Deng has dinner with his counterpart at his company's most important
strategic partner at Chez Something-or-other French. Saved by the
expense account on that one, too! He checks his e-mails before bed.
It looks like they'll have to cut Finnish. Too bad. Maybe next year.
Over the next couple of days, Deng will take 53 phone calls on his
dual mode 3G mobile and make 47 of his own. He wraps up the EMEA campaign
from the airport lounge on the way back to HQ. He's crazy like this
nine to ten times a year, but he has three-weeks paid vacation to
make up for it, and this year he's doing Tahiti with family and England
with his sisters. He loves his job.
